Managing can be more discouraging than playing, especially when you're losing because when you're a player, there are at least individual goals you can shoot for. When you're a manager all the worries of the team become your worries.
It seems like I spent my entire managing career chasing the Yankees,
He wasn't firing like he used to, but he was still very fast and had very good control, ... All you had to do was hold your mitt around the strike zone, and it'd be right there.
They have more power than we did and maybe a little more pitching depth than we had. ... And I love their manager.
I think people are forgetting that we have a growing population that we need to inform.
It's tough to be pitching and having to worry about what a catcher's going to call. If the catcher has a reputation of being a rockhead, the pitcher's gonna have to worry that much more.
I'm delighted, ... I don't know of anybody who had a statue built of them while they were living. It's a great feeling.
I don't think he thought there were any players today that were better than Babe Ruth, the old-timers he played with,
That was a great year (1959) for the White Sox, but a tough loss in the World Series,
Given the volatility of the situation, I think the team is doing extremely well with the offload of supplies to help not only the base, but the local community as well.
I say, 'Why are you doing this? I was just doing something I liked.'
Do what you love to do and give it your very best. Whether it's business or baseball, or the theater, or any field. If you don't love what you're doing and you can't give it your best, get out of it. Life is too short. You'll be an old man before you know it.
Everybody says we hated the Yankees. We didn't hate the Yankees. We just hated the way they beat us.
I'm delighted. I don't know of anybody who had a statue built of them while they were living. It's a great feeling.
