I wondered if I would find the next few years as personally fulfilling as the first four I have spent as the president of NBC News. I also found myself missing the opportunity for the kind of creativity I've had in previous jobs.
It gives me great pleasure to formally give Steve the full reins of this critically important division at this crucial time.
It gives me great confidence to know that Steve will be at the helm while we navigate these complicated times,
Over the course of the past two weeks, ... NBC News has done a remarkable job of reporting on the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, and Steve has been integral in every aspect of our preparation, planning and coverage. . . . We have a talented team in place in the front office, and I'll be working closely with all of them throughout this transition.

He expressed the position that NBC is in, ... We're in a rebuilding phase. Nobody's in denial about that.
I don't know why Brian Williams isn't blogging right now,
I actually think we're still in the first inning. The changes are coming fast and furious, but I think it's going to evolve so much more over the next five years. Organizations that have been set up to deliver news and information in a very specific manner for the last 50 years need to evolve and need to evolve quickly.
He didn't know if the man would back up and try and run him over, or whether he had a weapon, so he defended himself and hit the gentleman two times. Unfortunately, they were fatal blows.
We think it matches up perfectly with all of our properties. We think there are opportunities to drive both brands. It will bring together the storytelling of news and entertainment.
We see this as a huge growth area, but it's not mutually exclusive. The fact is that the consumer experience has to include both (the Internet and television) and this gets us both.
