amusing humour serious stuff work
I usually balance out autobiography with goofy, amusing stuff to help keep the humour in my more serious work.

I couldn't have found a better place. I tell everybody back home how nice it is,
although conveyed directly less work worked
Generally, I don't pencil, especially with the autobiographical comics, although I've usually planed out composition in my head during the scripting stage. I like to work directly in ink, to keep the spontaneity and expression conveyed by a less worked over line.
although art becoming comics range slick styles using ways wide
I think I've been able to build up a wide range of styles in storytelling, using comics in different ways from project to project. I think my art has become more accomplished, although I try to keep it from becoming slick or superficial.
becomes books calculated diary drawing meant peek private soon trick ways
My books should feel like you're getting a peek into a private world: a diary no one was meant to read. As soon as I start thinking, 'This book is going to be published,' my drawing becomes calculated and deliberate. It's one of the ways I trick myself.
characters comics drawn emotional expressing good inner physical

comics drawn fringe grant mainstream maybe shelf warren
Just about everything put out by Top Shelf and Drawn & Quarterly and Fantagraphics is what I keep up with. And once in a while, I'll read the more mainstream comics - I like Grant Morrison's writing and some of Warren Ellis' stuff, although maybe they're more on the fringe of the mainstream.
fit intention life relationships thinking written
I've never written a book with the intention of winning someone back or getting back at someone or anything like that. It's always just been about thinking about life and how relationships fit in to what life means.
approach bit humorous laugh tried
We tried to approach the whole thing with a bit of humor. We need to be able to laugh at ourselves.
attention court expect justices keeping level lots pace paid realistic spring supreme
The pace he was keeping up in the spring was pretty intense. It's probably not realistic to expect that level of attention to be paid forever, when you've got Supreme Court justices and lots of other things on the plate.
beat mountains production value
The production value is with the landscape, the mountains and the water, and the city. You can't beat it.
