Rick talks through the use of a computer generator, but his first words to me, 'I can,' highlight his ability to be normal and to fit in with a population that is disabled but still a part of humanity. The film shows clearly that he can overcome his disability if he can do all of this.

Some of the individuals in this film have burns that have left 80 percent of their body scarred and disfigured. It explores the physical and psychological impact conveyed in five different portraits. It is my hope that these films be made available to help people better understand the lives of the disabled.

People want more honesty and authenticity. Twenty years ago, if you made a biopic it was a canonization of values. Now you have to make it balanced and honest.
