games good reason won
We were a good team, but the reason why we won 100 games was the manager.
areas brought chance decent filling good health hold hope job players pleased type
If we are healthy, I think we've got a pretty good chance of being a pretty good club. There are some areas that you hope will hold up. Most of them are health related. But I would say that we've done a decent job of filling in some of the gaps. I'm really pleased with the type of players we've brought in here.
baseball both brian developed goes good great match methodical ownership position relationship respectful thoughtful
Brian goes about his position in a very methodical and thoughtful way. He also has developed a great relationship with ownership. They are so respectful of baseball operations. It's about as good a match as you can have between baseball ownership and operations, and it works. There is respect both ways.
acclaim address apart easy farm filled gaps good ground half impatient interest issues middle point sit tear trade trading
It would have been real easy for me to address the short-term issues and trade half the farm system. I could have. There was enough acclaim and enough interest out there that I could have filled other gaps out there by trading some of the young players. But I'm not short-sighted. I'm not impatient to the point that I'm going to do something that's going to tear apart the future, but I'm also not patient enough to sit back and get beat. This was probably as good a middle ground as I could find.
becoming good hit met mike players regret talking
You're talking about two players who met every expectation. In some ways, they were even better than I had thought they would be. Mike hit a lot better than he had in past. He's becoming a better and better hitter. My only regret with Omar was, if he's this good at 38, what was he like at 28? He was tremendous.
champions entire good separate true winners
I've had to live that way my entire life. Because of that, I've been able to separate the good from the bad, the true from the false, the winners from the losers, the champions from the also-rans.
champions entire good pulling separate since smart street true winners
I've had to be street smart since I was a little kid, ... I've had to know who's right, who's wrong, who's pulling my leg, who's got integrity, who I can trust. I've had to live that way my entire life, and because of it, I've been able to separate the good from the bad, the true from the false, the winners from the losers, the champions from the also-rans.
accentuate adding capable four gives huge staff starters upside won
I think adding Brett is a huge plus. He gives us four starters capable of going 180 to 210 innings. He's won a lot of games. We have a staff that will accentuate his strengths. I think he has more upside than he's shown.
confidence decent franchise needed players saw veteran
I saw a franchise that needed its confidence restored. It had a decent nucleus of veteran players that needed some support.
since value
I take nothing for granted. I know the value of finances, I know the value of people. I've had to be street-smart since I was a little kid,
knack knew road winning
That was important, that he had a knack for winning and a knack for developing, that he knew the road it took.
became clear fast interest mentioned yes
Little by little, it became clear he had an interest in being here. When I mentioned his name, Grady couldn't say yes fast enough.
brian games greatest playing rebuilding seemed thinking together
I was used to the pace. I'm used to working fast, thinking things through. Brian and I were together 11 years. It seemed like one long season. We were always retooling and rebuilding and reloading. One of the greatest things we accomplished was playing only 14 games in 9 years where we were out of the race.
anybody rule
It doesn't rule out Jeff, or anybody else.
