I helped convince him to run (for Congress) ... when he was going to retire I helped make him Appropriations chairman,
I have people who come to this floor, who claim they represent the workers, who say they are for an international bank institution that is totally secret, that is run by a bureaucrat whose major policy is to raise taxes on workers in the Third World to pay off New York banks, ... Now that doesn't sound like populism to me.
Governor Romney may be running for CEO, I'm running for President
The Republican brand has been so badly damaged that if Republicans try to run an anti-Obama, anti-Rev. Wright or, if Sen. Clinton wins, anti-Clinton campaign, they are simply going to fail. This model has already been tested with disastrous results.
Can we drop a little bit of the pious baloney? The fact is, you ran in '94 and lost. That's why you weren't serving in the Senate with Rick Santorum. The fact is, you had a very bad re-election rating, you dropped out of office, you had been out of state for something like 200 days preparing to run for president. You didn't have this interlude of citizenship while you thought about what you do. You were running for president while you were governor.
We have got to get beyond this political bologna. I'm not allowed to say anything positive about Hillary Clinton because then I'm not a loyal Republican, and she's not allowed to say anything positive about me because then she's not a loyal Democrat. What a stupid way to run a country.
I think the destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media makes it harder to govern this country, harder to attract decent people to run for public office.
We've had a bad three months, so it's a dangerous period for us, ... We have to change or we run the risk of defeat.
I think we prefer to go to instant check on an immediate basis and try to accelerate implementing instant checks so that you could literally check by thumb print whether there was a convicted felon with dangerous behavior or dangerous mental behavior. Instant check is a much better system than the Brady process.
I think a lot of our members resent the kind of muscle that the union bosses have brought into the Capitol,
I think this administration tends to have the right general policies but to be remarkably unwilling to look at how weak their instruments of implementation are. We threw away a year in Iraq because of our mistakes.
It is not my habit to answer questions posed to me when I am halfway out the door with my back turned ... The speaker and I continue to work as effectively as we have for the last four years.
It is our historic destiny and fate, there is no other country big enough, complex enough or capable of providing leadership on a worldwide basis.
We believe there ought to be a tax cut for those who save, invest and create jobs. And I'm very prepared to take on any kind of class warfare argument,
