It was a different time back then, ... They'd book Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw at the Blue Moon. In Opelousas, you'd have the Cedar Lane. They'd have Bob Crosby. You could have fallen asleep in the streets and not have worried about somebody doing anything to you. We just went out and enjoyed ourselves. People knew how to just have a good time.

We went down there to help out. It was a lot like New Orleans is now. I just remember the bayous being flooded over. There were some bodies. It wasn't pleasant. But we did what we had to do. You didn't think about it. We were down there to see how we could help.
