We decided early on that if we were going to do it, we were going to do it properly. Spike, Michel and I were quite inspired by the Criterion Collection, where they take a great film and surround it with whatever exists relating to it--archival footage, new footage, a nice book. A complete package. If these were just music video compilations, specifically, they would have been a lot less interesting than if we tried to make them definitive and complete.
