Charles Cumming quotes about
bully zealot
I'm not good with bullies and zealots.
military makeup differences
I find a difference in British spy fiction and American spy fiction. In the American version, it's more militaristic, partly because the CIA has more of the military makeup. Whereas MI6 is more of a cerebral, intelligence-based, relationship-based service, i.e., all they do is recruit people to get information out of them.
music silence solitude
St. John of the Cross points out that the divine music can best be heard in solitude and silence. The sonorous music is not a physical sound that vibrates the eardrum but something transcending the senses. Physical solitude and silence remove the distracting noises that prevent us from hearing on deeper levels.
people firsts should
The first thing you should know about people is that you don’t know the first thing about them.
complicated term concessions
As we get older, life becomes very complicated in terms of concessions we have to make.
worry people live-your-life
Worrying about how you'll be remembered is pointless. Better to try to live your life in such a way that people will respect you while you're still alive.
