choice life situations smooth start surprise swim understand
We don't go through life with it all being smooth sailing. ... We all understand situations where you know it's swim or drown. It's a choice you have to make, and sometimes we surprise ourselves, when we actually make that choice and start swimming, with how well we can do it.
thinking understanding risk
I think since I did Monster I really started understanding how hard it is for first time directors. I think there's a lot of great stories out there, but it's high risk.
both community considered hollywood jobs justify men mine pick struggled survival taking terrified theirs understand women
Hell, I would be terrified if Hollywood showed up in my community and was going to pick a scab, ... The other thing was: 'How are the men going to be portrayed?' You have to understand what the men struggled for. At the end of the day, it was survival for both sexes. That doesn't justify the behavior, but in this community, this mine was the one thing they considered theirs and their fathers' and brothers'. The women were taking jobs in a community where there were no jobs to be taken.
extremely foreign genre good jump rarely service sign sit took understand
It took me awhile, to be honest, because this was so extremely foreign to me. I had never done anything in the genre and I didn't feel like an expert. So, it took me a while to sit with Karyn and understand how I was going to service this. I very rarely jump into something and go, 'Oh, my God, I know I have to do this.' And, that's usually a good sign for me.
families
I think the most important thing that I got from them was when I got to be with their families and with their children,
arty films good jeff kinds showing
Jeff wanted to do something that makes him feel good and is not just arty so nobody's going to see these films. They're showing these kinds of films are financially viable.
related strength
really related to that kind of strength in women.
based character fought harassment sexual women
My character is fictional, but she is based on all the women who fought the sexual harassment case, and everything you see in the film actually happened.
body excited physical scared telling using
I was very scared going in, but also really excited about doing a film using my body again. I like that she never spoke. This character, she was very quiet, but she was telling her story through her body. It's a very physical role.
door everybody grateful great house instantly intentions knew maybe offered opened option saturday sit therefore thinking walked wearing women
I was told to go to a director's house at 9 p.m. on a Saturday night, so I went, thinking maybe this is the kind of thing you do. He opened the door wearing pajamas. I walked in, and he offered me a drink. I instantly knew what his intentions were, and it was not an option for me. I feel grateful I have this personality, but a lot of women don't. That's why I can't sit back and say, 'Things are great for me, therefore they're great for everybody else.'
forgotten people
I think people have forgotten what actors do,
change changing law laws people realized takes
We've come a long way, and changing a law is really important. What I've realized is laws change, but you also have to change how people think. And that takes time.
challenge life
I think in life we want to challenge ourselves.
happiness people
I'm happy for people who want to get married. It's not my thing.
