Frank Robinson
Frank Robinsonis an American former Major League Baseballoutfielder and manager. He played for five teams from 1956 to 1976, and became the only player to win league MVP honors in both the National and American Leagues. He throws well enough to win up here. He's got to locate a little better up here to be successful.
He didn't have enough. We needed a better performance out of him to have a chance to win the game.
I think John gained that experience and understanding that he can do it now at this level. He is what I call 'established' now on this staff. He doesn't have to come here and win a job. All he has to do is get ready for the season.
He prepared you to go out and play baseball and have an opportunity to win ballgames, ... We were well organized. He knew the rules of the game. He executed the game fundamentally -- offensively and defensively. He could show you both ways. In the infield-fly rule, he would teach you how to do it defensively and offensively.
Nobody is going to win a job today, tomorrow or the first week of Spring Training. So everybody settle down and do what you are capable of doing. Get yourself ready for the long haul. Mostly everybody in that room doesn't have a real good chance to make that club. There are just too many people in there.
If he wins the job, we will be better off in that respect, because he can create a little havoc at the top of the lineup and put some pressure on the defense and pitching if they are worried about him stealing second or going from first to third.
If we can do that more often, we're going to win our share of games.
Actually, I wouldn't mind another week down here. Not to play games, but just to work on fundamentals. We didn't win many games, but, maybe just in the last week, we started looking a little better. Before that, we looked terrible.
