These guys going off the trail, seeking to get deeper into the backcountry and being lazy about it, disturb elk habitat. It makes a miserable experience for everyone, ... Starting your hike in the dark is absurd, because you're chasing elk out. You want to be walking into elk country when you can see them in your scope. There's no need to start walking until a minimum of 15 minutes before you can shoot.
If you can't hike 30-45 minutes to get into elk, then you shouldn't be elk hunting,
