stripes delight might
If H. P. Lovecraft and H. L. Mencken had ever collaborated, they might have come up with something like The Edge of Reason. This one will delight thinkers-and outrage true believers-of all stripes.
promise calling found
I thank you for calling them off, young ser. I promise you, they would have found me indigestible.
dream wish
It had been more of a wish, actually, but it sounded better to call it a dream.
popcorn superficial dies
If somebody dies and you just go get more popcorn, it’s a superficial experience isn’t it?
fighting men loyal
A man who fights for coin is loyal only to his purse.
struggle character writing
There’s an old writing rule that says ‘Don’t have two character names start with the same letter’, but I knew at the beginning that I was going to have more than 26 characters, so I was in trouble there. Ultimately it comes down to what sounds right. And I struggle with that, finding the right name for a character. If I can’t find the right name I don’t know who the character is and I can’t proceed.
queens kings protect
Why do the Gods make kings and queens if not to protect the ones who can't protect themselves?
crush dream thinking
My biggest dream was to ruin the lives of my readers and crush their souls... And I really think that worked out pretty well for me.
kids thinking made-up-stories
I had these cheap alien toys and I made up stories for them. They were space pirates. They didn’t have names so I made up names. These were the first stories I wrote. Even as a little kid I was thinking about torture.
kings stories problem
I could have written a story about a well-adjusted family. Ned Stark comes down to King’s Landing and takes over and solves all their problems. Would that have been as exciting?
names looks use
A lot of fantasy names are too much. They’re too difficult to pronounce. I wanted the flavour of medieval England. I took actual names we still use today, like ‘Robert’, and in some case I tweaked them a little bit. I made ‘Edward’ into ‘Eddard’. If you look back at medieval times, no one knew how to spell their own names. There are a lot of variations that we’ve lost.
names useless buttons
I do know what’s been useless to me is the online fantasy name generators. I’ve tried those a few times, and they say, ‘Just hit this button and we’ll generate 50 fantasy names,’ and they all turn out to be ‘Grisknuckle’.
two firsts nails
There are two kinds of writers. There are architects and gardeners. The architects do blueprints before they drive the first nail. The gardeners just dig a hole and plant the seed and see what comes up.
