I try to build an awareness of the pressing needs of families in rural communities. Society appears to be aware of family needs in urban centers. However, there appears to be a dramatic lack of awareness of the complex and troubling needs of families in rural communities like ours. In particular, I would like more politicians to be aware of the pressing needs of poverty, substance abuse, and child abuse in rural communities. I think most people assume those are only 'big city' problems.

It would be similar to what we did this year. It's a great opportunity for parents, teachers and students to get together and discuss expectations.

They want to know how fourth grade is different than third grade. It gives them a clue on what to expect.

I think in some ways there are more things gained through this type of day versus a traditional first day.
