work
In time, I think it'll work out. We'll make it work out.
developing leagues learning minor philosophy players prospects reason team win winning
In the minor leagues the most important thing is developing players. The reason I want to win is I want to develop winning players. So my philosophy is you develop first, but I want to the team to win. I want the players who are prospects and developing learning how to win.
athlete great
He's such a great athlete that he's able to play other positions. He could play center, he could play left.
manager personal sacrifice
He's out there, he's doing what the manager is directing. He's making a personal sacrifice for the organization.
book close rejected respect
He's rejected our offer. We respect what he's done on the field, but now we're going to close the book and go forward.
believer character makeup special
I'm a big believer in makeup and character and leadership, and Brian's a special person as well as a special player.
afford averages batting concerned hitters low night pitchers
I'm very concerned about the ERAs our pitchers have. I have concern about the low batting averages our hitters are having. We can't afford to have this night in and night out.
close help stretch
He always has had a live arm. We thought he would really help us down the stretch when we started getting injuries. We thought we were close to a deal.
player hands errors
I never pay attention to errors in the Minor Leagues. Derek Jeter made 43 errors in the South Atlantic League, and I didn't care. With his hands and his range, I don't worry about that with Zimmerman. He is a good defensive player.
fighting relax mountain

agent compete deal free market needed player
He's not a player I'd like to have to compete on the free agent market for, because he's so special. So I think this is a deal that needed to be done. I don't think it could have waited.

He's one of the best hitting coaches in baseball. He did a phenomenal job with the Cards as hitting instructor. In our farm system, he did a remarkable job.
adjusted coming consider everyday guy lenny player
I consider Marlon like Lenny Harris. He has adjusted from being an everyday player to a guy coming off the bench.
bad best capable certainly hitting obviously played players power speed stealing
I do feel bad for how it played out (in spring). But he's been tremendous. ... His speed and power combination is obviously one of the best in baseball. There are not many players capable of hitting 40 (home runs) and stealing 40 (bases). He's certainly one of them.
