He was terrific tonight. I certainly would hope that this is a game he can build on. He doesn't have anything left to prove in the Minor Leagues. He has to prove that he belongs here, and I think he started to tonight.

I'm not advocating taking a ball on the first pitch every time up there. A couple of times (yesterday), the first pitch was there, and we swung at it. But I'm continuing to see these guys take smart approaches to hitting, and that's encouraging.

I'm not advocating we take the first pitch every time we walk up there. But, if you're going to take a swing at a first pitch, have it be a really good swing. If we keep preaching that, there won't have to be a whole lot said if you make a weak out on a marginally bad first pitch. It's not the way you play winning baseball.

I know he wants to retire from the game knowing he did it physically competing at the end, ... You have to admire that.

Having the lead changed the way we go about our business. We weren't playing catch up. You can't hope to slug your way back into games.

Aggression is no reason to be foolish. The double play is one thing. Running into stupid outs? That's even worse, in my opinion.

He didn't hit it very well at all, but he hit it in a wonderful spot. That's baseball.

I could sit here and talk about those things until I'm blue in the face, but those are things if you're going to become a good club you have to pick up on and capitalize. Thus far, we've not been able to do that.

No question there's a lot of pitching here. And we're keeping an open mind to everything we see.

He pitched like an ace today -- and he had the demeanor of one. I saw a guy who was extremely interested in wanting to be the ace of the staff.
