The president has to answer this. I don't think we can laugh at the London Times and British intelligence. We need to know.
I am concerned about information I have received indicating that President Bush, himself may have supplanted the role of veteran career litigators at the Department of Justice, ... As a result, I am particularly interested in learning about what role, if any, Phil Perry, associate attorney general and Vice President Cheney's son-in-law; Alberto Gonzales, assistant to the president and White House counsel; and Larry Lindsey, assistant to the president for economic policy and director, National Economic Council, played in this decision.
This does, sometimes to some people, begin to take on the appearance of a coup. We're talking about a polite, paper-exchanging, voting process in which we rip out the 42nd president of the United States.
The president has been filmed bicycling around the neighborhood and he has personally attested to spending time fishing and attending little-league baseball games. ... Keep in mind, also, that White House press secretary Scott McClellan recently proclaimed about the president's vacation in Crawford, that 'Spending time outside Washington gives the president a fresh perspective of what's on the minds of the American people. It's a time, really, for him to shed the coat and tie and meet with folks out in the heartland and hear what's on their minds.' Possibly, you may have to actually talk to people to find out what's on their mind.
campaign finance has no relationship to the Starr referral and amazingly, this committee has now subpoenaed the president of the United States and the attorney general of the United States to provide documents that they don't have the authority to provide without a court order, whose criteria this committee is yet to even satisfy.
Even worse than an extra-marital affair is the use of federal prosecutors and federal agents to expose an extra-martial relationship. Yes, there is a threat to society here but it is from the tactics from a 'win-at-all-costs' prosecutor determined to sink a president of the opposition party.
The charges really beg the larger question - what did the president and vice president know about these and related matters, and when did they know it?
The independent counsel had four years to investigate the president. This committee had four months. The White House is now getting two days. There is no question the president's conduct was wrong. But I believe that the legal case against the president is not strong.
Journalists become candidates for cardiac arrest when they see or hear an African American disagreeing with an African American. We would become inauthentic if we did not have disagreements with this president.
Judge Wright's dismissal of the suit against President Clinton should now be the final word on what has become an unprecedented partisan witch hunt of one of the most popular and successful presidents of the 20th century.
We do not believe that a soft money ban will cripple minority voter registration and get-out-the-vote efforts.
Some have said it's unconstitutional on its face, ... Let me be more polite: We're troubled; we're deeply troubled.
Without a date certain, this proceeding could turn into a yearlong, two years, politicized fishing expedition of enormous expense,
Today's witness, Kenneth W. Starr, wrote the tawdry, salacious and unnecessarily graphic referral that he delivered to us in September with so much drama and fanfare. And now the majority members of this committee have called that same prosecutor forward to testify in an unprecedented desperation effort to breathe new life into a dying inquiry.
