He was selected as one of the "Mercury Seven" group of military test pilots selected in 1959 by NASA to become America's first astronauts and fly the Project Mercury spacecraft. I envy Neil for that wonderful, wonderful experience.
What impresses me every time I come in and see this thing, ... is how fast aviation advanced beyond the Wright brothers. If you think it was only about 15 years until they were dog fighting over France in WWI...
