Johnny Weissmullerwas an Austro-Hungarian born American competition swimmer and actor best known for playing Tarzan in films of the 1930s and 1940s and for having one of the best competitive swimming records of the 20th century. Weissmuller was one of the world's fastest swimmers in the 1920s, winning five Olympic gold medals for swimming and one bronze medal for water polo. With but few exceptions, it is always the underdog who wins through sheer willpower.
Swimming gave me my start, but my pal Tarzan did the real work. He set me up nicely.
I have always been vitally interested in physical conditioning. I have long believed that athletic competition among people and nations should replace violence and wars.
How can a guy climb trees, say 'Me, Tarzan, you, Jane,' and make a million? The public forgives my acting because they know I was an athlete. They know I wasn't make-believe.
