We were in a delay, but then I changed the setup where it was a three-man delay with our three guards and Durham's guy backed off him a little. That's not the way I would have drawn it up, but it was within what we were trying to do at that point.

We were in dire need of moisture because some of the plants were bone dry. We're still evaluating what the storms meant to the crops because we had reports that pea-size hail fell later in the morning. Some plant leaves were damaged and possibly fruit as well, but it's too early to tell the extent of the damage. We'll be monitoring the situation over the next couple of days.

Wine to me is something that brings people together. Wine does promote conversation and promote civility, but it's also fascinating. It's the greatest subject to study. No matter how much you learn, every vintage is going to come at you with different factors that make you have to think again.

From a wine critic's perspective, there are far too many innocuous, over-oaked, over-acidified, or over-cropped wines emerging from California. While those sins would not be a problem if the wines sold for under $20, many are in fact $75-$150. That's appalling.
