clubs luck stayed
A big part of it is we've stayed healthy, ... I'd like to think some of it is luck and some of it is design. We're so risk-averse, we have to look at other things other clubs don't have to look at.
acquire attractive claim lower pack player position teams wire
I know I've got attractive players. We are also at an advantageous position to acquire a player off the waiver wire because teams lower in the pack than us are not going to put a claim in.
allowed appreciation broken difficult expectation forget fortunate gave lived lofty players point public transition
At that point in my career, I didn't have an appreciation how difficult the transition is for young players to the big leagues. It's fortunate that everything's kind of broken right, that we've lived up to expectations. But that was a lofty expectation to place on the public here - no one's allowed me to forget that I gave that.
adversity belief communication consistency critics doubting earlier manager reason season team year
I think he should get it (the Manager of the Year Award). The reason our team was able to withstand the adversity we had earlier this season was his belief in the team. That belief, when a lot of critics were doubting him, his consistency from day to day, and his communication skills, all of that is a big reason why we are where we are.
attempt aware drafting efficient effort general hope managers system work
The general managers are making an effort in an attempt to be more efficient in our drafting and development, ... As with everything new, we are aware there will be logistical challenges. But it is our hope that we can subtly reshape the system to work more efficiently for us as an industry.
came career followed hello liked respected sure
I've always liked and respected Paul. I've followed his career and made sure to say hello to him when he came to town.
bullpen deserve flux guys hopefully middle next safe settle state three
It's safe to say our bullpen is going to be in a state of flux for the next two to three days. We're going to look at some guys and hopefully find some who will settle down the middle of our pen. There are guys down there (in the minors) who deserve an opportunity.
andrew brown bullpen cleveland competing contribute good guy point spot
Andrew Brown is competing for a bullpen spot and displayed very good stuff. He's a guy who will contribute in Cleveland at some point this season.
bear bright future hang trust
Bear with me, hang in there and trust we have a very bright future in '06 and beyond.
davis guys improve money opportunity original plan player playing role rotation saw signing slate spend spot team unable upgrade younger
Our original plan in the off-season was to slate the No. 5 spot in the rotation for a younger player (Jason Davis or Fausto Carmona) and to spend money to upgrade elsewhere. When we were unable to get some other things done, we saw an opportunity to improve the team by signing Jason. The young guys still could end up playing a role for us in 2006.
impact level mental standard starting toughness
From a level of mental toughness and competitiveness, he has kind of reframed the standard for all of us in this organization. He made a big impact on our young starting pitchers.
commanding fastball good help last needs point training work year
At some point this year he's going to help us in the bullpen. He's come a long way in the last year and had a good training camp. He just needs to work on commanding his fastball better.
chasing eric great watch yankees
Hey, we're chasing the behemoths. I look up and watch Anaheim and the Yankees and Oakland, it's kind of funny. But shoot, Eric (Wedge, manager) is great at internalizing things.
optimistic
It's not done yet, but I'm optimistic that we can get it done.
