I was uncomfortable with the timing, ... We were getting millions less from the federal government for Medicaid and having to search for funds to restore some of those cuts and I just did not think it was right to put a pay raise on the board that would cost tens of millions of dollars.

I was interested in photography when I started college at Antioch. I took a basic photo course there, and other photography classes. I got my first real job through a work-study program at Antioch. It was working as a helper in a mental hospital. Strange, but I'm sure that had something to do with where I am now.

I did the writing in New York, where I have an apartment, ... I spread it out all over the floor. There were piles and folders everywhere. But at the New York apartment I don't have to worry about the dog and the phone doesn't ring as much.

I picked economics at the end of my undergraduate time because it seemed to be a really nice combination of theory, including mathematical theory on one hand, and things that are quite practical that you can touch and see and feel. So I picked it, and I consciously thought of it as an experiment to see if I liked it. And it worked.
