I think it is helpful having a history other than playing music. We've toured a lot together, hung out a lot. So, we knew each other pretty well before we ever got together, which is important. You could probably call on the greatest studio musicians in the world and it doesn't mean they can work together.

It took up until a month and a half ago to be completely finished. If you condensed all the (recording) time, it took two and a half, three weeks, but stretched over two years.

We started off making a full album with Brendan in his studio in Detroit and had nine or 10 songs done, then he got busy with his own record and we started talking to Jack and Meg about touring together. So we decided to do something for the road, and it turned out that the five completed songs made a kind of cool record, with this dreamier, darker mood than some of our other stuff.
