It's what everyone dreams about that comes to play here, and we try to be real frank about it. We have tremendous NFL experience on our staff, our background and the way we teach is exactly the way they do up there. It's a selling point.
I think the guys that have come back now have found that they have enjoyed the heck out of it. After the grind of the NFL, the college game seems a little more different and wholesome and spirited.
It was really a unique experience. I had been at the University of Pacific for my first three years coaching. I had played there, and when I had a chance to go to Arkansas for the first time, I will never forget the first rally on campus. It was crazy, and the energy was awesome, and the band was playing and the students went nuts. It was the first sense of what big-time college football was like, to be on the inside of it. That year at Arkansas was the year that really energized me about being a college coach and liking it and coaching on the big level. I got captured by it.
That was so much fun. That was so exciting. It was very dramatic. For an energy junkie like myself, it can't get any better. It was a wonderful day for college football. Something I'll never forget.
Matt Leinart's decision to return for his senior year really sent a message about him as a person and about how much fun it is to play college football.
There's no question that as much pressure as can be generated in college football is surrounding Matt. He's marvelous at dealing with it, but he's just a kid, too. He's got his times when he'd much rather be outside all of the attention, but that's just life and that's what it is.
He's going to be involved in a lot of special teams.
It was exactly the right thing to do. You want to win the game right there.
As we do every spring, we'll try to establish the high level of competitiveness, intensity and work ethic that have been the hallmark of our program. Spring football is a very important time for us to develop and capture those attributes.
That quarterback just ran all over the place. He made the difference. This is their night. Hats off to 'em.
I love Larry Bird, but I don't agree with him. I love him and respect everything about him. I learned a long time ago, and I've made this statement: Coaches don't lose their expertise and ability to make the calls.
I think it's a tremendous accomplishment. I made it clear to the guys after the fact,
He is handling it as well as you can handle it, but there is a tremendous burden for him and he is just a young pup trying to make it,
He'll be sore, but we'll be counting on him,
