It discourages plagiarism, because if the kids know it's going to be checked they're more likely to work a little harder instead of take the easy way out and actually try and do things properly.

With freshman they just don't seem to have a sense of how to correctly do research and that's probably because they're just not sophisticated enough yet. With juniors and seniors, if they don't understand plagiarizing it's high time they did.
