When we were getting pretty close to signing him, he called us from one of his maneuvers. I asked him, 'Where are you guys?' He said, 'Up north.' I said, 'Where up north?' He said, 'The Arctic Circle.' That was different. He e-mailed us a picture from there. He had his parka off.

We thought he could have been a pretty good Division I volleyball player. He could have been an All-American. But he decided to go to HPU and play basketball, and he was a good basketball player. It was economics. You can get a full ride at HPU and Hilo, but only a partial scholarship here.

We deserve to go, but so does Irvine. One of us has to stay home. That's the way sports is. You have to play your best when it counts.
