William Joseph Levadais an American cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. From May 2005 until June 2012, he served as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith under Pope Benedict XVI; he was the highest ranking American in the Roman Curia. He was previously the Archbishop of Portlandfrom 1986 to 1995, and then Archbishop of San Francisco from 1995 to 2005. Levada was elevated to the cardinalate in 2006...

It was an idea that just kept coming back to me, ... It's really hard to quantify. I guess God had a hand in it. But it's not as if you hear a voice. It's through circumstances. I thought about it enough over time that I felt I better check this out.

By and large the people in our parishes, ... the priests tell me they think that the steps the Bishops of this country have taken have done a great job and are meeting the crisis. We're doing a great educational outreach program trying to prevent abuse by clergy or anyone else.
