afraid pitch says trust yell
Leyland's not afraid to yell at you from the dugout. It's situational things, not pitch selection. When he says something, I take it to the bank. I trust what he says.
achieving good potential
The most frustrating part is we have the potential to be such a good ballclub, and we're not achieving what we need to achieve. It's so frustrating. We've been so close.
aside easy explain fallen hard numbers personal point short team year
There are things you can't explain this year -- things that are hard to swallow. My personal stats -- numbers -- they're easy to put aside if you're winning. But as a team to this point we've fallen short of our expectations, and that's what makes it tougher.
fine grew guy heard jim structure
I heard Jim Leyland is an old-school guy and a disciplinarian, and that's fine with me. That's the kind of structure I grew up in.
bit future jim
He's Jim Thome. He's good. But in the future with him, being left-handed, I've got to do a little bit better.
bad basically season
I basically had one bad inning and it made the whole season look bad. I just had to keep going and keep grinding.
time
If I had that every time out, I'd go 32-, 33-0.
chance pitchers time year
If I had that every time I went out, I'd have a chance to go 32 or 33-0. It's not going to be that way all year long. We as pitchers know that.
couple figure holding instead pitches quality runner slide steps threw throwing together wide worried
I did a couple slide steps and then threw a couple pitches wide and was worried more about holding the runner instead of throwing a quality pitch. So when he said something, you put two and two together and you figure it out.
good lost played three ugly
The thing is, it's not been ugly baseball. We've lost three games, and we've played good baseball.
hopefully later situation year
It's a two-way street. Later in the year if there's another situation like that, hopefully he'll have that same kind of approach. We're getting to know each other here.
afraid yell
It's not very normal, but Leyland's not afraid to yell at you from the dugout.
jason johnson kenny last leader rogers time vocal
It's the first time we feel we can go to someone. We had Jason Johnson last year. He wasn't necessarily the vocal leader we needed, but Kenny Rogers is that.
change finesse hard hurt last left mindset pitcher pitches tried wants work year
It's more of an approach. We tweaked just a little bit. ... He wants me to have that mindset that that's the kind of pitcher that I am from the left side. He wants me to think that I can come in there hard and still be able to work away and change speeds. And I think last year I may have tried to finesse too many pitches in there, and it hurt me at times.
