art people special
There are so few people who can really take hold of art and sort of eat and chew it up. Somehow it's got to be held special, sacred in a corner, and if you don't do the same thing with it, if you're not equally reverential, serious, and pompous about it, well, then you're not a great artist. Who needs that?
running records spine
I have a sort of tactility about music. I go into record stores and just run my fingers over it, the spines.
thinking complicated-relationship complicated
I think Tolstoy had an unbelievably complicated relationship with women.
mother years two-year-olds
What I do remember is visualization of the sound of music, seeing bodies in movement in relation to how music sounded, because my mother practiced at the keyboard a lot and I also went to her lessons. As a two year old, three year old I remember seeing things in movement.
thinking conformity boxes
Before you can think out of the box, you have to start with a box
thinking gears done
I am fairly concise when I work and I work quickly because I think work is done better in a high gear than done our in a gear when everyone's exhausted. Get focused, do it!
book writing thinking
I write. I have read a great deal. I enjoy books. I like the wit of languages. Even French I like. I like to be able to think in different modes. I like to be able to use the language a great deal and carry on rehearsals in French.
believe dancing movement
I do believe that when dancing is right, the movement possesses a logic common to us all.
art practice skills
Confidence is a trait that has to be earned honestly and refreshed constantly; you have to work as hard to protect your skills as you did to develop them. . . The one thing that creative souls around the world have in common is that they all have to practice to maintain their skills. Art is a vast democracy of habit.
art mean thinking
I don't mean this, but I'm going to say it anyway. I don't really think of pop art and serious art as being that far apart.
believe responsibility artist
I don't believe in rushing and saying this is done and over with. That form of rebellion doesn't make sense to me. I've always attempted to familiarize myself with the traditions, and consider that a responsibility of the artist.
art real creativity
While most people in the arts think they have to be constantly looking forward to be edgy and creative....the real secret of creativity is to go back and remember.
thinking decision body
I don't think politicians should be allowed into power who are not familiar with their bodies, because that's where our bottom line is. And I know that they would make totally different decisions if they felt responsible simply for their own bodies.
sleep night thinking
I think people want very much to simplify their lives enough so that they can control the things that make it possible to sleep at night.
