I want to get him in the lineup, I want to give us the best chance we can to win, ... Watching him have a couple of good at-bats, watching him field ground balls and things, I think he'll be all right there. I've been told he can play shortstop, so it's not really foreign to him. All I'm asking him to do is make the routine plays.
I wanted to take a look at him at shortstop. It could work, but I don't know the next time he'll be out there.
A pitcher can be the leader among the pitchers and be there for anyone who wants to approach him. But he is not that one guy who will go to a hitter and get in his face. Sometimes you need a leader and arms of that leader on the pitching staff, bullpen and the reserves. A position player can cross the line and doesn't mind going over to talk to the pitchers. But pitchers are kind of hesitant to go over to the offensive side of it.
That's a lot of years to live in this game. To be in the game this long, you have to be very fortunate. A lot of people has been involved in this game and very few have spent that much time in the game. I feel very lucky, and I appreciate the opportunities that I've had and still have. I don't take anything for granted.
A rivalry has to be cultivated. This, in time, could be.
They're giving us a chance. You know the old saying, don't let a guy hang around. If you have a chance to knock him out, knock him out. They've had a chance to knock us out.
They're getting around it, ... They know who they want and they bring in a minority or two and interview them. They're circumventing the policy. The commissioner's office has to look at this and tighten the guidelines. They have to get more involved in the interview process, maybe have a representative from the commissioner's office at the interviews.
It was good to see him have a good offensive day and a good defensive day. That has to really make him feel good and get him up on his toes a little bit.
They came in and did the job for us.
You can't have it both ways. The people we had in there at the end did a terrific job. The guys battled back.
You can't ask for anything more. He should have been out of the first inning with 16 pitches and a zero up on the board.
The frustration starts when we played like we played last night and then we come out and play like we did today. I don't know what it is. I just can't figure this team out.
The first time was much more severe, and he wasn't able to walk. I think this one will be kind of short term,
The chance is very good that he doesn't pitch again this year. I'd be surprised if he does. But if he does, it's because he says his arm is good. ... He still feels like his arm is not right and as long as he feels that way, I wouldn't even think about sending him out there to the mound.
