Everybody was yelling 'we love you Flutie,' and 'you should be the starter.' They're yelling everything, ... They love the guy there. They were yelling stuff at him about when he was the starter back in the '80s, saying 'they never should have let you go.'
Obviously there are great coaches on both teams, but I just felt that energy in New Orleans. From the very beginning there was a genuine feeling that they wanted me there. They believe I can come back from this shoulder injury and lead them to a championship. They were as confident as I am, and that meant a lot.
That kind of stuff just doesn't happen to him. He's just not used to that.
I played with Rodney, I know what a leader he is, ... It's not only the physical things he does. It's the leadership, the mental toughness, what he imparts to his teammates. I know they've been able to put in a lot of subs over the years and not miss anything, but a player like Rodney is something special.
Definitely, it's best for both of us. Obviously, I'm not surprised by anything that happens any more. I've made it known I want to be here and, hopefully, that will happen. I'd like to say if it were up to me, they'd sign me long term and I'd be the guy here for my whole career. . . . You win football games and everything takes care of itself.
Obviously, you gradually work toward being full strength.
This whole thing with San Diego, when I went into the off-season, I thought for sure I'd still end up with the Chargers. I think that was a shocker for everybody, including myself. Even up to recently, I thought something was going to happen.
We had four shots at it. I've got to come through.
Tom (Condon) and I have been moving full steam ahead trying to evaluate what other options there could potentially be. I'm just waiting to see what free agency has in store for me.
We weren't able to get any rhythm going.
We had our chances in the second half to make it a one-possession game and we didn't do it.
We feel like we have to win because of the situation we're in. I still feel like we're in a position where we control our own destiny. If we win each of these next three games, we're in.
You enter the game and see what kind of game plan they have for you defensively. If they bring a bunch of guys down in the box that you figure are going to pressure a lot, there are big holes in the defense to take advantage. I felt like we were able to do that today.
We didn't throw the ball to him at all. That's partially my fault. We didn't get around to calling plays for him because we had too much other stuff going on.
